About this spot

The Outer Alster is the largest body of water in Hamburg. It is situated just outside (hence the name) the city walls of medieval Hamburg - but as the city was growing, it became a part of the city. The shores are mainly residential areas, with several hotels and commerce buildings especially in the southern part.

The Outer Alster is surrounded by footpaths and cycle paths with a total length of over 7 km, which are very popular with locals for recreation and jogging. The Outer Alster itself is mainly used for sailing and rowing as well as pedal boating and Stand Up Paddling. As a sailing area, it is not considered to be quite easy, as the often changing wind conditions due to the surrounding buildings and the roads leading into the lake require some skill on the part of the sailors.
