About this spot

Molasses Reef is a coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It lies to the southeast of Key Largo, within the Key Largo Existing Management Area, which is immediately to the east of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Molasses Reef Sanctuary Preservation Area is the most visited reef in the Upper Keys for scuba diving and snorkeling, with numerous dive sites marked by mooring buoys. The reef is known for its clear water, many fish, numerous rock corals and easy accessibility. It is a classic outer reef with a well-defined spur and groove system of coral development.

An unmanned reef light is located near the reef.

Named for the reef in the Turks & Caicos Islands on which it was found, the Molasses Reef wreck is thought to be the oldest shipwreck discovered in the western Hemisphere.
