About this spot

Kiel Lighthouse (international registration no. C 1215) stands off the coast in the central bay of Kiel in front of Kiel as a leading and orientation light and accommodates numerous measuring facilities as well as a pilot station. It is equipped with numerous instruments, e.g. a water gauge, a measuring device of the BSH, an ODL probe for monitoring environmental radioactivity as well as a weather station of the German Weather Service and the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.

Measurements are gathered and processed by by the IFM-GEOMAR and provided to the public via open access on the internet and a display on the "Kiellinie" at the institute itself.

The fire colours of the lighthouse are white, red and green, with a nominal range of the 400-watt lamp (with the colour filters applied) of 14 to 17.6 nautical miles. The Lübeck Water and Shipping Authority is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the tower, the fire is monitored and remote-controlled by the Traffic Centre in Travemünde.
