About this spot

IJmuiden is a port city in the Dutch province of North Holland and is the main town in the municipality of Velsen. The IJmuiden name literally means "mouth of the IJ", which is a hint to the importance the town has for the Amsterdam harbour: IJmuiden is located south of the entrance to the North Sea Canal, which connects the open North Sea with IJ Bay and thus directly connects the port of Amsterdam. The official Amsterdam water gauge is measured at the local lock chambers. The town is an important fishing port and a supply port for the Dutch oil platforms. A ferry connects IJmuiden and Newcastle in the northeast of England.
