About this spot

Helgoland is a small archipelago in the Heligoland Bight (part of the German Bight) in the southeastern corner of the North Sea. They are the only German islands not in the immediate vicinity of the mainland. Heligoland is a holiday resort and enjoys a tax-exempt status, as it is part of the EU but excluded from the EU VAT area and customs union. Consequently, much of the economy is founded on sales of cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and perfume to tourists who visit the islands. The climate of Heligoland is typical of an offshore climate, being almost free of pollen and thus ideal for people with pollen allergies. Since there is no land mass in the vicinity, temperatures rarely drop below freezing even in the winter.

The southern Harbour can be accessed independently of tides. There is a lot of traffic in the morning and in the evening due to numerous wind power support ships and the crew transporter. Larger sport boats can find a good place in small packages at the Nordkaje (ascent by ladder). Medium sized recreational craft moor at a pontoon row that starts along a light pier from the north quay or at a pontoon row along the east quay.
